Blue Bloc · Historical figures
Physical description
Height: 1.90 m. Heavily built, with broad shoulders, a broad face, and a defined jaw. Short, dark hair graying at the sides. Clean-shaven.
Education and training
Studied Law at the University of Pennsylvania and earned a doctorate in Civil and Commercial Law.
Career
Began as a union lawyer before entering politics. He reached the presidency with broad popular support amid inflation, labor unrest, and institutional crisis.
His platform advocated state intervention in markets, public-sector job creation, and protection of the population against the power of large companies. These positions brought him into conflict with the corporate interests gathered in LUME.
During the Great War, he opposed involving the country in the business of the conflict, a policy known as the HOG doctrine. It clashed with corporate plans to expand industrial and arms exports.
His vice president, Thomas Porter Clerk, accused him of serving foreign interests and seeking to align the country with the Central European powers. The confrontation culminated in the coup of July 7, 1935, during which Johnson and his government were captured.
Character and interests
He was energetic, direct, and stubborn, able to connect with workers and mobilize their support. He placed firm trust in the law as a means of limiting corporate power and defending people’s rights.
